About Sylva

Growing up in the streets of Beirut and later NYC, my taste buds were introduced to a delightful range of flavors, cultures, and traditions. As an Armenian with a Pontic Greek grandmother, a father born in Syria, and a mother born in Lebanon, I carry the essence of the Middle East in my heart.

Amidst Lebanon's civil war, my family sought refuge in New York City, a land of opportunity that shaped who I am today. Embracing American Life opened doors to education, careers, health benefits, and a secure environment to raise my family. However, in this transition, I found that my time in the Middle East instilled resilience and a deep appreciation for artisanal cuisine.

Residing in Manhattan, I've nurtured a fulfilling life as a mother to my two wonderful daughters, Nora and Nicole. I have found in this city a home and a place to grow my career. With a rich and dynamic career spanning 17 years, I have thrived as a fiber optics engineer and taught the subject at the university level. My professional journey led me to become a trusted advisor to the United Nations on sustainability, a role that further solidified my expertise.

During this thriving career, I cultivated a passion for food preservation. This fascination has earned me international awards on the global stage. Through all these achievements, one dream has always remained close to my heart - representing the beauty of the middle east with my own cookbook.

Today, I am a culinary enthusiast passionate about celebrating and promoting my rich culinary heritage and cultural diversity. Food is more than flavors; it is a powerful medium to create dialogue, learn traditions, and connect with humanity. Through sharing meals, one can discover the beauty and ethos of Middle Eastern culture, forging strong bonds that transcend borders.

Where it All Started

"Food creates a link between cultures and people through memories."

Fueled by my rich culinary heritage, I carried my love for food everywhere. Now in New York, I visit the farmer's market on weekends, where local farmers display their seasonal produce. In this sensory wonderland, I immerse myself, handpicking an array of vibrant greens still adorned with the earthy touch of soil and rainbow colors of fruits.

Armed with fresh ingredients, I found a sanctuary in my kitchen. As I slice, sautée, and simmer, I feel a sense of tranquility enveloping me. I embrace the significance of the harvest, the wonder of seasonal produce, and the magic of spices.
